How to Choose an MSI Gaming Laptop
-
Choose Your Screen Size
Screen size dictates your field of view and desk space footprint. A 15.6-inch display offers standard viewing dimensions suitable for tighter spaces. Stepping up to a 16-inch panel gives you more vertical room for interface elements and HUDs. An 18-inch model like the MSI Crosshair 18 maximizes visible screen area for stationary desk setups. Larger panels improve game visibility but increase chassis dimensions significantly. Check your desk area and transport bag dimensions before choosing between compact 15.6-inch frames and full-sized 18-inch desktop replacements.
-
Select the Right Processor
Processor selection determines performance in background computing, streaming, and physics-heavy games. Listings here feature processors ranging from Intel Core i5 and i7 models up to 24-core Intel Core i9 and Ultra 9 chips, alongside 16-core AMD Ryzen 9 options. Choose an Intel Core i5 or i7 if you run standard gaming titles without active background tasks. Opt for a 24-core Intel or 16-core AMD chip if you handle heavy simulation titles or simultaneous recording. The MSI Katana 15 HX provides a 24-core processor built specifically for heavy multi-threaded productivity.
-
Evaluate Internal SSD Storage
Internal storage determines how many game installs and media files fit locally without requiring external drives. Models in this selection provide solid-state drive capacities of 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB. A 1TB drive suits players who keep a rotating roster of several modern titles. If you install multiple large releases together, a 2TB SSD provides comfortable headroom. The MSI Crosshair 18 HX AI offers a 4TB SSD, which suits users keeping extensive offline media and game libraries. Check your library size before deciding.
-
Match Weight to Portability
Chassis dimensions and weight dictate whether a laptop stays on a desk or travels easily. Laptops on this list weigh between 4.1 pounds and over six pounds. The MSI Thin 15 weighs 4.1 pounds with a 0.85-inch thickness, making it easy to carry in a standard backpack. Heavier options weighing close to six pounds or more feature thicker chassis built to manage high-output components. If you plan to commute daily, prioritize a chassis under five pounds. For stationary desk setups, heavier builds remain practical.
-
Check Display Panel Resolution
Screen resolution determines image sharpness and clarity across your games and desktop software. Options here range from standard 1080p panels up to QHD+ and 2.5K displays. A 1080p screen requires less computational effort from the graphics processor, helping maintain fluid frame delivery in competitive titles. A QHD+ or 1440p display produces sharper edges and finer detail, which benefits open-world titles and desktop productivity tasks. The MSI Katana A15 includes a QHD screen for sharper visuals. Balance your preference between visual clarity and rendering workload before purchasing.
