Apple MacBook Air 15-inch M5 Alternatives: 6 Similar Picks Compared

How each alternative compares

Apple MacBook Air 13-inch M5

The MacBook Air 13-inch M5 keeps the same M5 chip, 16GB of unified memory, and 512GB SSD storage found in the 15-inch model. The primary difference is the screen size, which drops to 13.3 inches. This makes the 13-inch version significantly more portable for students who carry their laptop frequently. You get identical performance for everyday productivity and multitasking but sacrifice some screen real estate. If you prioritize carrying your device in a bag over having a large display for creative work, this smaller form factor is the better choice. It retains the all-day battery life and lightweight design, making it ideal for users who move between classes or cafes often.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 13.8 Snapdragon X2 Elite

The Surface Laptop 13.8 Snapdragon X2 Elite offers a different experience with a 13.8-inch screen and 16GB of RAM paired with 512GB of storage. It weighs 2.97 pounds, which is lighter than the 15-inch MacBook Air. This device targets users who want a portable Windows machine for daily productivity and media consumption. You give up the Apple ecosystem and the M5 chip's specific AI capabilities. However, you gain a different operating system and potentially better compatibility with certain Windows-only software. The Snapdragon processor focuses on efficiency and battery life. This pick suits you if you prefer a premium Windows laptop with a high-quality display and strong portability for general tasks rather than Apple-specific creative workflows.

Microsoft Surface Pro 13-Inch Snapdragon X2 Plus

The Surface Pro 13 Snapdragon X2 Plus is a tablet-laptop hybrid with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It features a 13-inch screen and weighs just under 3 pounds, offering maximum portability. This device is designed for users who need a compact, touch-enabled device for productivity on the go. You trade the traditional laptop form factor and the M5 chip for a versatile 2-in-1 design. It is ideal for creative tasks and note-taking where touch interaction is beneficial. The device provides all-day battery life and a lightweight build. If you value flexibility and a smaller footprint over the dedicated keyboard and larger screen of the MacBook Air, this hybrid is a strong alternative for mobile professionals and students.

Apple MacBook Pro 14 M3 Pro

The MacBook Pro 14 M3 Pro offers a 14-inch screen with 18GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It uses the older M3 Pro chip instead of the new M5. This model is heavier at 3.5 pounds and thicker than the Air. It provides a more compact professional workstation with a stronger port variety. You get a slightly higher RAM capacity but an older processor generation. This pick fits professionals who prioritize portability and port selection over the latest AI features and the larger 15.3-inch display of the Air. It is a robust choice for users who need a powerful machine in a smaller chassis, accepting the trade-off of a slightly older chip for a more traditional pro laptop feel.

Acer Nitro V 16 RTX 5050 Laptop

The Acer Nitro V 16 is a Windows gaming laptop with a 16-inch 165Hz display, an Intel Core 7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and an RTX 5050 graphics card. It weighs 4.63 pounds, making it much heavier than the MacBook Air. This device is built for gamers who need high refresh rates and dedicated NVIDIA graphics. You give up the M5 chip's efficiency, the macOS ecosystem, and the thin profile. In return, you get a powerful GPU for gaming and a larger screen with a 165Hz refresh rate. This pick is ideal for Windows users who prioritize gaming performance and screen fluidity over portability and battery life. It is a substantial device suited for desk-bound gaming rather than mobile productivity.

Alienware 16 Aurora RTX 4050 Gaming Laptop

The Alienware 16 Aurora RTX 4050 Gaming Laptop features a 16-inch screen, Intel Core 7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and an RTX 4050 graphics card. It weighs 5.49 pounds, which is significantly heavier than the MacBook Air. The display has a 120Hz refresh rate. This device is designed for gamers who value dedicated NVIDIA graphics and a large screen. You sacrifice the M5 chip's performance efficiency, macOS, and the lightweight design of the Air. The Alienware offers a more traditional gaming laptop experience with higher thermal output and weight. It is a suitable choice for users who need a powerful Windows machine for gaming and do not mind the reduced portability. It fits those who prioritize graphics power and screen size over battery life and thinness.
