How these picks compare
Apple MacBook Pro 16-Inch Core i7
The Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch Core i7 swaps the 14-inch form factor for a larger 16-inch display. This model offers 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, similar to the ThinkPad’s memory and SSD capacity. However, it weighs 4 pounds and measures 14.1 by 9.68 inches, making it significantly bulkier than the 0.6-inch thick ThinkPad. You gain screen real estate and color accuracy, which suits stationary creative work. You lose the ultra-portable chassis and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity found in the X1 Carbon. Choose this if you prioritize display size over lightweight mobility for business tasks.
Dell Latitude 15.6" Core i7 Laptop
The Dell Latitude 15.6-inch Core i7 Laptop provides a spacious 15.6-inch screen and 16GB of RAM with 512GB SSD storage. This matches the ThinkPad’s memory and storage specs but expands the display area for users needing more workspace. The Latitude weighs 5 pounds and measures 22.2 by 15.4 inches, making it much heavier and larger than the compact ThinkPad. It is designed for business use but sacrifices the thin profile and portability of the X1 Carbon. Pick this alternative if you value a larger display and robust processing power over carrying a lightweight device in your bag.
Dell Latitude 14-Inch Ultrabook 32GB RAM
The Dell Latitude 14-inch Ultrabook with 32GB RAM doubles the ThinkPad’s memory capacity while offering 1TB of SSD storage. This provides double the space for large files and extensive multitasking compared to the 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD in the X1 Carbon. It retains the 14-inch form factor and includes an Intel Core i7 processor. However, it may lack the latest processor generation and the Thunderbolt 4 ports found in the ThinkPad. This option suits professionals who need extensive memory and storage in a portable 14-inch chassis, prioritizing capacity over the newest hardware features.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13.5" Touchscreen
The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13.5-inch Touchscreen offers a compact 13.5-inch display with a sharp touchscreen interface. It includes an Intel Core i7 processor but only 256GB of SSD storage, which is half the capacity of the ThinkPad’s 512GB drive. It weighs 3.4 pounds and measures 12.1 by 8.78 inches, offering a similar portable footprint to the X1 Carbon. You gain a responsive touchscreen for business tasks but lose the larger 14-inch screen and greater storage space. Choose this if you value a sharp touchscreen and compact size, accepting less local storage for business applications.
Dell Latitude 14-inch Touch Laptop with 32GB RAM
The Dell Latitude 14-inch Touch Laptop with 32GB RAM provides double the memory of the ThinkPad’s 16GB DDR4 RAM. It includes 512GB SSD storage, matching the X1 Carbon’s capacity, and features an Intel Core i7 processor. This model weighs 3 pounds and measures 14 by 6 inches, offering a different chassis size and potentially less thin profile than the 0.6-inch ThinkPad. It suits multitasking professionals who need extensive memory for business workloads. You gain significant RAM capacity but may sacrifice the ultra-thin design and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity specific to the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9.
Dell Latitude 14-Inch Core i7 Laptop
The Dell Latitude 14-inch Core i7 Laptop offers 32GB of RAM and 512GB SSD storage, doubling the memory of the ThinkPad while matching its storage. It features an Intel Core i7 processor and a 14-inch display, aligning with the X1 Carbon’s core specs. This model weighs 1.22 kilograms and measures 13.6 by 12 inches, presenting a different physical profile than the ultra-thin ThinkPad. It is designed for heavy multitasking and business apps. You gain substantial memory for demanding workloads but may trade the X1 Carbon’s portability and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity for higher RAM capacity in a slightly bulkier chassis.
