How each alternative compares
Apple MacBook Air 13-inch M5
The MacBook Air 13-inch M5 shifts focus from raw power to portability and efficiency. It weighs significantly less than the 16-inch Pro, making it easier to carry for students and mobile professionals. You trade the larger 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display for a smaller 13-inch screen, which reduces screen real estate for detailed creative work. However, the M5 chip offers strong AI performance and all-day battery life. If you prioritize mobility and battery endurance over maximum processing power and a high-resolution professional display, this model is a practical choice. It keeps the same 512GB SSD storage capacity as the original.
Apple MacBook Air 15-inch M5
The MacBook Air 15-inch M5 provides a middle ground between the 13-inch Air and the 16-inch Pro. It features a 15-inch display, offering more screen space than the 13-inch model but less than the 16.2-inch Pro. At 3.33 pounds, it is lighter than the 4.74-pound Pro, improving portability for students and general users. You get the same 512GB SSD and 16GB Unified Memory configuration. The trade-off is a less premium build and lower peak performance compared to the M2 Pro chip. This option suits those who value screen size and efficiency over the highest possible processing power and professional-grade thermal management.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 13.8 Snapdragon X2 Elite
The Microsoft Surface Laptop 13.8 Snapdragon X2 Elite introduces a Windows experience with ARM-based efficiency. It weighs 2.97 pounds, making it much lighter than the 4.74-pound MacBook Pro. You gain access to a responsive touchscreen, a feature absent on the MacBook Pro. The 13.8-inch display is smaller than the 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR, which may limit workflow for some creative tasks. However, it offers strong battery life and a premium build for portable productivity. If you prefer Windows or need a touchscreen interface, this model provides a lightweight alternative. It includes 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD storage, matching the base configuration of the original MacBook Pro.
Microsoft Surface Pro 13-Inch Snapdragon X2 Plus
The Microsoft Surface Pro 13 is a versatile 2-in-1 device designed for maximum portability. It weighs less than the MacBook Pro and features a detachable design with a touchscreen. The 13-inch display is significantly smaller than the 16.2-inch Pro screen, which may not suit users needing extensive workspace. It uses the Snapdragon X2 Plus chip, which prioritizes efficiency over the raw power of the M2 Pro. You get 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD storage. This device is ideal for mobile professionals who value touch interaction and compact form factors. It sacrifices the dedicated keyboard and larger display of the Pro for flexibility and ease of transport in a daily commute.
Apple MacBook Pro 14 M3 Pro
The MacBook Pro 14-inch M3 Pro offers a more compact version of the Pro experience. It weighs 3.5 pounds, which is lighter than the 4.74-pound 16-inch model. The 14-inch display is smaller than the 16.2-inch screen, reducing the workspace available for multitasking. However, it features the newer M3 Pro chip, which may offer improved efficiency and performance per watt. You get 18GB RAM and 512GB SSD storage, providing slightly more memory than the base 16GB model. This laptop fits creative professionals who value portability and display quality but do not need the maximum screen size. It is a strong alternative if you want Pro features in a smaller chassis.
Acer Nitro V 16 RTX 5050 Laptop
The Acer Nitro V 16 is a dedicated gaming laptop, differing fundamentally from the MacBook Pro in purpose. It features an Intel Core 7 processor and an RTX 5050 graphics card, designed for 1080p gaming. The 16-inch 165Hz display offers high refresh rates, unlike the standard refresh rate of the MacBook Pro. It weighs 4.63 pounds, similar to the Pro, but includes a bulkier design for cooling. You get 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD storage. This model is for budget-conscious gamers who prioritize gaming performance over battery life and build quality. It lacks the premium materials and professional creative workflow optimizations of the MacBook Pro but delivers strong graphical performance for gaming.
